Nasa's first rover, Sojourner (on board the Mars rover Pathfinder), and its twin rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, used parachutes, retrorockets, and airbags for landing. The airbag needed to be strong enough to absorb shock when the spacecraft landed on rocks or rough terrain, and bounce around the surface of Mars at highway speeds (about 100 km/h) after landing.
